'Speak No Evil,' 'The Killer's Game,' 'The Critic' among new movies in Milwaukee this week (2024)

This week at the movies: lots of men behaving badly, and one team almost winning it all.

Here’s what’s new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Friday, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.

‘Speak No Evil’

Short version: An American family on vacation is invited to stay at the country estate of a British family who, it turns out, have an unraveling collection of dark secrets. James McAvoy, Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis star in this psychological thriller from producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse outfit.

‘Just a Bit Outside: The Story of the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers’

Short version: The only Milwaukee Brewers team (so far) to make it to the World Series gets a loving portrait in this new documentary, with plenty of player interviews and game footage.

‘The Killer’s Game’

Short version: When a paid assassin (Dave Bautista) is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decides to take out a hit on himself. But when it turns out that the diagnosis was wrong, he has to find a way to stop it. Sofia Boutella, Pom Klementieff, Ben Kingsley and Terry Crews co-star.

‘The Critic’

Short version: A powerful theater critic (Ian McKellen) in 1930s London sets out to save his job by any means necessary. Gemma Arterton, Mark Strong and Lesley Manville co-star in this period thriller.

‘The 4:30 Movie’

Short version: In the summer of 1986, a 16-year-old gets the courage to ask the girl of his dreams to a movie at the local multiplex. Writer-director Kevin Smith’s (“Clerks”) coming-of-age comedy has an impressive cameo-filled cast, including Justin Long, Jason Lee, Kate Micucci, Ken Jeong, Method Man and Rosario Dawson.

‘God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust’

Short version: A reverend recruited to run for Congress squares off against a powerful state senator who is determined to keep religion out of government. Scott Baio, Dean Cain, Isaiah Washington and Ray Wise star in the latest movie in the faith-fueled “God’s Not Dead” series.

‘Dan Da Dan: First Encounter’

Short version: A pair of high schoolers — one believes in ghosts, the other in extraterrestrials — wind up with unexpected powers after a paranormal encounter. This big-screen adaptation of a Japanese manga series is showing dubbed in English.

‘Am I Racist?’

Short version: Conservative podcaster Matt Walsh poses as a diversity, equity and inclusion expert to investigate that world in this comic documentary/exposé produced by right-wing news site the Daily Wire.

IRL Film Club debuts with ‘Join or Die’ at Oriental Theatre

The In Real Life (IRL) Movie Club, an in-person, nonprofit movie club designed to bring people together to watch independent movies, formally launches this weekend in member theaters around the country, including Milwaukee’s Oriental Theatre. The first movie showing in the series, appropriately enough: “Join or Die,” the documentary updating Robert Putnam’s study of America’s fading joiner culture, “Bowling Alone,” showing at noon Sept. 15. ‘Blazing Saddles’: 50th anniversary screenings at Marcus Theatres

It’s been 50 years since Mel Brooks’ 1974 Western comedy first hit theaters. See it on the big screen at 4 and 7 p.m. Sept. 15 and 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at Marcus Theatres’ Hillside, Majestic, Menomonee Falls, North Shore, Ridge and South Shore cinemas. Tickets are $14. Info: marcustheatres.com.

‘Cooked: Survival by ZIP Code’ at Times Cinema

The documentary “Cooked” examines the 1995 heat wave that killed 739 people in Chicago and what it reveals about the intersection of climate change and structural racism. It’s showing at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Times Cinema. Tickets are $10. Info: ntg-wi.org.

‘Usher: Rendezvous in Paris’

This year’s Super Bowl halftime star takes his show to the La Seine Musicale in Paris during Fashion Week, as captured in “Usher: Rendezvous in Paris.” The concert movie-plus is showing for a limited run Sept. 12-15, with varying showtimes at AMC Mayfair Mall and Marcus Theatres’ Majestic, Menomonee Falls and South Shore cinemas. Free outdoor movies in the Milwaukee area this week

Milwaukee/Davidson Park (Near West Fest): The inaugural Near West Fest, a free festival from 4 to 10 p.m. Sept. 13 in Davidson Park, 3725 W. Juneau Ave., there'll be a screening of the 2023 version of "The Little Mermaid" at 7:15 p.m. Info: nearwestsidemke.org/nwsweek.

The Milky Way Drive-In, next to Franklin Field in Ballpark Commons, 7035 S. What’s showing at UWM Union Cinema

Highlights this week at the UWM Union Cinema, inside the student union at 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., include: two movies from the LA Rebellion movement of Black filmmakers, Charles Burnett’s groundbreaking 1983 drama “My Brother’s Wedding,” at 6 p.m. Sept. 13 and 7 p.m. Sept. 14, and Bill Woodberry’s “Bless Their Little Hearts” at 8 p.m. Sept. 13 and 5 p.m. Sept. 14; and “Bad River,” the documentary charting the Bad River Band’s battle in Wisconsin over a pipeline, at 6 p.m. Sept. 18. "Here After”: In this supernatural thriller, a woman (Connie Britton) whose daughter (Freya Hannan-Mills) is miraculously revived after an accident realizes something followed her daughter back from the other side. Available Sept. 13.

“Strangers”: A woman falls for a hit man and, after joining him in his work, starts to question everything, including what he’s really up to. Sienna Guillory, Jamie Bamber and Jon Voight star. Available Sept. 17.

“The Pitch: Patient Safety’s Next Generation”: This documentary looks at the evolving role of technology in improving patient safety. Available Sept. 17.

“Uglies”: Joey King stars in this dystopian sci-fi drama set in a world in which compulsory surgery eliminates physical differences to make everyone "pretty." Laverne Cox and Chase Stokes co-star. On Netflix Sept. 13.

“Child Star”: Demi Lovato directed this new documentary, in which she and other former child stars — including Christina Ricci, Kenan Thompson, Drew Barrymore, Raven-Symoné and more — share the highs and lows of growing up in show business. On Hulu Sept. 17.

“Officer Black Belt”: A martial arts wiz takes a job with the Ministry of Justice to help track down criminals still wearing their electronic ankle bracelets in this Korean action comedy. On Netflix Sept. 13.
